Limit’d # TWO - Hype DC

limit’d magazine

limit’d magazine

Late this week I was working on something unrelated to limit’d magazine but still shoe related, where I can be quoted as saying in reference to the number of shoes at my work desk "There are more shoes here than what I own". Followed up by something along the lines of that I need to go shoe shopping which some how lead to a conversation about sneakers with wedges and heels.

Don't get me wrong I do like shoes, I just find it hard to find ones I love or ones that have a story behind them. One of my favourite pair of sneakers are from the limited edition series french artist Fafi did with Adidas. Another are a pair of boots I have that are patchworked from recycled leather. These shoes have a story, they are no longer just a pair of boots or a pair a sneakers.

This is why magazines from companies such as Hype DC are great. Whilst Limit'd magazine showcases products from Hype DC you also get some insight into the background different shoes, the culture of sneakers and those that wear them.

Limit'd has recently released it's second issue featuring Melbourne based creative agency Just Another; profiling 10 of their artists including Does, Alex Lehours, Bec Winnel, Drypnz and Gary Seaman among others, takes a look at South LA sneaker style thru the eyes of Sneaker Freaker and West coast rapper DJ Quik, explains the do’s and don’ts of what happens when the tattoo gun and sneaker culture collide. Plus is that's not enough offers up over 40 pages of the latest footwear via Hype DC.

Hints + Tips - MSFW The Debate

MSFW The Debate
Last Tuesday I went along to the Melbourne Spring Fashion Week Industry Day. As part of the day was a debate about paid vs earned media, the title of the debate 'Don't waste your dollars on paid media: earned media is more valuable'.

On the side for paid media was, Sarah Stringer from Carat, Lisa Messenger from Renegade Collective and Rene L'estrange-Nickson from Broadsheet. For earned media was Phoebe Montague of Lady Mebourne, Janice Breen Burns from Voxfrock.com.au and Anton Staindl from Haystac.

The debate was based around where should businesses invest their marketing media dollars? Is paid media better than earned media? Whilst the guests were on the catwalk making their point I took many notes, some of which are below:
  • Grow your own media first, before looking at paid and earned media.
  • Bought media creates brands - as brands can control them
  • Look at multiple platforms for spreading your content.
  • Don't underestimate the power of creativity - capture the imagination of your consumer base both with earned and paid media.
  • When looking at earned media choose a blogger that suits your brand, do your research.
  • Have a reason for creating content not just because.
  • A Scatter gun approach is not suitable, especially with earned.
  • Spend the time and effort on your own media assets. Create something interesting enough for people to want to visit and stay awhile.
  • Follow Sarah Stringer of Twitter at @string_a_ling, she is hilarious!
After all that where do I stand? Well, where I always have, I believe you need a healthy mix of both paid and earned media. It depends on your product/service and your business. Where and how you spend your marketing media budget has to be in context with what what it is your marketing.

Day five of Melbourne Spring Fashion Week saw iconic Australian brand Elwood Apparel Co. showcase its latest range of quality garments and accessories for both men and women on the Hub Runway.

The Elwood summer range for 2013 combines classic tailoring and easy to wear shapes to suit the modern Australian look and feel. The collection is built around bold custom prints incorporating the summer colour palette with additions of pastels and pops of brights.

It looks that shirting will be big this season, though with a twist, through the use of  beautifully textured materials such as soft linens, luxe silks and summery cottons. It's just Elwood doing this look either.

I for one am looking forward to not just a cool and breezy warm summer wardrobe, but one that is a little more tailored than before.

Day two of Melbourne Spring Fashion Week was a celebration of collections from the next generation of Australia’s fashion and design talent. There was a little bit of everything from the avant-garde to reinterpretations of familiar silhouettes on the catwalk during Student Runway 1 featuring pieces by RMIT student.

For me the student runways are a place where you really see creativity of fashion unfold. You get a peak at the next wave of design talent before they become household names. If you look closely you can see some may have been influenced by the recent Autumn/Winter '13/'14 shows, whether the designers were truly influenced by the likes of McQueen and Givenchy, I don't really know. I found the designs on show by the RMIT students bold, original, enchanting and executed with technical mastery.

Props to the team at KEVIN.MURPHY for the hair and Mecca Cosmetica for the make-up, both looked amazing. No matter the style of designer creation the overall looks, looked seamless.

Introducing 3...

Spring Beauty Must Haves
It's starting to warm up and Spring is in the air. It's time for floaty dresses and pretty bright colours.
Spring for me beauty wise is a time to inject a splash of colour into my look, looking after my skin and getting glammed up for events. Here are some of my favourite beauty must haves for Spring which help me look after my skin and give my eyes a little wow factor...

Australis Mega Lash Mascara
This mascara features a thickening, waterproof and tear proof formula, it also comes with a wide bristled brush. Making it perfect to add a little wow factor to your look. I also use it not just for special events but also for day-to-day - I just don't apply as much. An extra special reason why I love this product - it's vegan friendly! Available at Australis.

The Body Shop Tea Tree Body Wash
This is a great body wash, it lathers onto the skin to cleanse, can be used daily and is designed to help prevent blemishes with regular use. But what I love about it is that I have found that with its antibacterial properties is also helps in aiding the healing process of minor cuts that I've obtained from being outdoors. Available at The Body Shop.

Innoxa Super Sensitive Gentle Day And Night Creme
I love a product that does two things, in a way this one does four. It can be used as a day or night creme and is specially formulated to deliver essential moisture and nutrients to the skin, whilst also providing protection against environmental irritants and allergens. It's a great treat to my skin after being on or in salty water. Available at Innoxa.
