CURVY 8 Is Coming

Wow, after what seemed like forever and a day CURVY 8 is about to be launched. Even though some people already knew the level of involvement I had in the book, I'd been a little tight lipped about it but now I think it's safe to let the cat out of the bag. When you get your hands on the latest book, if you flick through to the credits page you'll see that I was the Editor.

When I was asked to be the editor, I was just as excited if not more than the first time I got accepted into CURVY several years ago. I'm so proud to of been involved in CURVY 8 and also the fact that it features female artists from over 40 countries around the world makes it even better. It really was a great experience being apart of the selection and production process.

I'm yet to get my hands on a copy and have only seen the proofs, but even if I do say so myself it looks to be a damn fine book.

Now it's not 100% confirmed if I'll be going to Sydney for the launch. However if you are in Sydney do go along to aMBUSH Gallery on May 9 and have fun as CURVY launches the latest edition and hosts an amazing group show, which is all part of Semi-Permanent 2012.

Help Me Get My Artwork To London




Every so often an opportunity will arise and you just have to grab hold of it and hope for the best. When I received an email recently from Brick Lane Gallery in London wanting to show my work I was over the moon. One of my goals with my artwork is to exhibit overseas and here is the perfect opportunity. I'm now wanting on sending around 16 pieces to London to Brick Lane Gallery for a group exhibition in early 2013 - though to do so I could really do with some financial help, as I just simply don't have the spare cash laying around.

I was discussing my dilemma with one of the guys I go to uni with and he recommended I check out Pozible and try to source some crowd funding. So I checked it out and after reading some of the other projects I thought - hey why not. So... as of yesterday I have my project up on Pozible and already have one generous supporter.

Now I'm not just after your cash, I also give you rewards in return for different amounts, such as if you support this project with a $50 - $99 pledge you'll receive a thank you on my facebookpage and twitter account, I'll post you a thank you card with 2 stickers and you'll also get a limited edition A4 print of one of the works to be displayed in the exhibition as chosen by me. Hints + Tips - A Must Read Book

About half a year ago I was recommended by Artel Gallery on Twitter (@artelgalleryuk) to read the book The $12 Million Stuffed Shark - The Curious Economics of Contemporary Art written by Don Thompson. At the time when I purchased it I was studying Microeconomics as one of my subjects at Uni, which I think helped me understand parts of what I was reading. I'm a bit of slow reader and only recently have I finished all 268 pages of the book.

The $12 Million Stuffed Shark, covers mainly Contemporary Art especially Pop Art, though does go into other genres of art. It uses mainly artists such as Francis Bacon, Damien Hirst, Any Warhol and Jeff Koons as examples of the workings of the economics of the Contemporary Art world.

The book is written by Don Thompson who is an university lecturer so at times can be hard going and you feel like your going through a paper rather than a book, but it touches on many topics that as a practicing artist I found interesting. It looks at the branding of auctions, artists and dealers, the auction psychology, fakes, pricing, the role of art critics and similarly related areas of the economics of Contemporary Art and just how does a stuffed shark sell for $12, that's if it sold for that price at all.

Now I don't want to give too much away, but whilst reading the book I was able to relate it to experiences I've had with galleries, buyers and what I've witnessed in the general art scene. Whilst I might not be selling pieces worth millions there are some gold nugget bits of advice throughout the book which I've started to implement into the way I sell my art. It has also given me a greater understanding of the impact that actions by individuals and companies can have on the art world in general. I large portion of the chapters is dedicated to the auction houses, and this can be at times fascinating, however I did have to try my hardest to push on through and keep reading.

I'd recommend for anyone interested in art, specifically contemporary art to read it as well as fellow artists. For the $20 or so it cost me get the book and the time I spent reading it, I think it was well worth the investment.

So thanks to Fletch from Invurt I was invited to join other media savvy peeps and those interested in street art for some of the most amazing Yum Cha in a private dinning room at the Hu Tong Dumpling House, beneath The Cullen hotel last Saturday afternoon. It wasn't just any old "Hey let's do food and chat" kinda thing, it was to kick off the up and coming Carbon festival.

To celebrate the Art Series Hotel, The Cullen opened it's doors and rooms not just to its guests but to the general public so that they could embrace the connection the hotel has to street art. There was heaps of amazing things to check out like Melbourne based artist Heesco painting the gym, the mural that Faith 47 painted on the side of the hotel, going on a tour of the hotel to view the rooms where Swoon, D*Face and Blek Le Rat have stayed and left their mark, oh and there was the ever continuing flow of drinks (inc. Red Bull), good food and music.

This is just one of many events going on in Melbourne to co-inside with the Carbon festival, so if you missed going to The Cullen, there are many more things to see and do. Plus there is the event itself. Which if I didn't have IRB training for life saving that same weekend, I'd be going along to.

Introducing 3...

I'm a massive supporter of collaborating with other artists and creatives. For me collaboration is about sharing ideas and concepts and creating something that couldn't of been created other wise. Three artists I'd love to collaborate with (hint hint nudge nudge wink wink) are:
• Photographer Matt Irwin - I can image creating characters on top of his canvas prints. Adding a level of make believe to his already beautiful photography.
• Illustrator Kaitlin Beckett - I'm already picturing my stenciled animals with her added armor and other things.
• Artist Luke Taaffe - besides I think he would be amazing to work with, I could see us working together on a surfboard decal.

A Look Back




Over my morning coffee I was going through You Tube watching a selection of short films and came across this one which documents the 9th Emptyshow. These shows ran for a period of over 5 years in Australia during the early 2000's, the period where Melbourne street art, especially stencil art was starting to come-out and show the world what it was made of. No-one had any idea who organised the shows, invitations to the opening was by word of mouth and the location was kept a secret until the very last minute. People would meet at a certain location, where they were the guided to an abandoned space that had been taken over by a bunch of street artists, who had been creative within it.

I never got to go to one, I hit the Melbourne art scene shortly after they stopped occurring, and I think with modern technology these days it would be hard to hold them with the same level of rawness. Though the Emptyshows will be forever be part of the history of Melbourne street art scene. The thing I most like about this video is that there are some pretty big names in it but not one single red dot, or price tag - it's all about the art.

Re-cap - Kin Art

As per my original post about Kin Art, I love that as a family we get together over an exhibition. Displaying illustrations, photographs, paintings, ceramics, jewelry and other bits and pieces. Kin Art is the forth Tattersall family exhibition to be held at Mushroom Crafts Art/Craft Space in Leongtha.

Though due to other commitments and suffering from a horrible cold/flu the same weekend I missed out on the bump-in and seeing what everyone else has been busy making. Though thanks to modern technology and the ease of sharing photos, I've been able to see the exhibition via my lap top. I'm looking forward to actually seeing some of the works in person when we bump-out the exhibition latter this month.

Hints + Tips - Go That Little Bit Further

Last Sunday I was down at the life saving club for some training. At the moment I'm one of the few ski paddlers in the club so generally I train either with my Dad, or anyone else who is down at the club willing to come along. However this time it was just me going solo. It was nice, being out on the crystal clear almost flat water seeing fish, birds and rays. It was warm and the sun was slowly making it's way across the perfect blue sky. I set off and thinking I might do some laps pole to pole. There are two no boating poles outside the lifesaving club which we use to train between. Though once I got to the far pole I changed my mind and headed towards the next lifesaving club. When I got there I pushed myself to go to the last of the bathing boxes - this is generally where I get to before turning around with my Dad. Then I could see the next life saving club and pushed on till I got there, where I finally turned around and paddled back. All up it was about a 6km paddle and not once did I fall in - compared to the week before when I spent more time in the water than on the ski.

Had I of just gone pole to pole, I wouldn't of seen all the wildlife, I also probably wouldn't of paddled the distance I did and I most certainly wouldn't of felt the same sense of achievement. Now don't get me wrong paddling pole to pole serves it's purpose especially in training, though sometimes I think you need to go that little bit further and test yourself.

It's the same with being creative, I think it's good for the soul to push your creative limits and try something that is beyond what you generally stick to. You might discover a new talent, a new style or maybe just something about yourself.

In-Between Worlds - Vexta

Vexta has been a huge influence on me creatively, even though we're both slowly shifting away from traditional stencil pieces and going down different paths creatively. She has offered me some of the best artistic advice I've ever received and I still reflect upon it every so often.

I'm so excited about her last solo exhibition, 'In-Between Worlds', before she heads to the Big Apple (New York City). Though I'am disappointed that I can only see it via the internet as it's all the way up north in Queensland. I truly do wish her the best of luck and can't wait to read about all her travels and see how it influences her work.

In-Between Worlds, Vexta’s latest solo exhibition, is a collection new works examining our relationship to ourselves, evolution, the mysterious interconnectedness of all living things and the atomic particles that hold it all together. Though acknowledging the possibility that at any moment it could shatter into a million pieces, transcend and reform into the the new.

Perfectly Imperfect by Phibs & Natural Progression by Beastman

I'm generally a huge fan of collaboration and working with other artists. The solo shows by Phibs and Beastman on the same night right around the corner from each other is no exception. It's like a duo exhibition within the local area and not restrained to just one gallery or space. The exhibitions will be held at Backwoods Gallery and House of Bricks in Collingwood, under the curation of Alexander Mitchell.

The duel exhibitions promise to present the styles, connections, influences and friendship of these two leading Australian street artists. Along with an opening night party will take place across the neighborhood with the extension of murals between the two galleries.

Not only am I interested in seeing fresh new works by Phibs and Beastman, but I'm keen to see just how these solo yet duo exhibition will connect.

Les Dessinatrices


When the lovely Rebecca Murphy told me about an up and coming exhibition at Espionage Gallery in Adelaide, I was pretty excited. I've never shown my work in Adelaide. So I jumped at the opportunity. I created two works for the exhibition 'See How The Meerkat Run' and 'The Drip of the Sandpiper' which you can see me painting in this video.

Bracelet / Anklet

A little while ago I bought myself some metal stamping tools and the pieces to make little charms. Purely because I wanted to make some bracelets and anklets for myself. Though there is no need for me to have 50 of them, so rather than wasting the bits and pieces I bought I've made some and put them in my online shop.

Hints + Tips - A Basic 2 Layer Stencil

Being a stencil artist I at times get asked by people how to cut stencils. As I'm pretty much self taught I find it hard to at times to describe my process. However I've managed to pick my brain to create what I think is an easy to follow how to guide in cutting a basic two layer stencil.

1. What you will need
• paper
• thick card or acetate
• markers and pens
• an image you want to use
• knife or scalpel
• cutting mat
• masking tape

2. Your image
Once you've selected an image you want to work with, print it out or photo copy it twice. Best to do so in greyscale or black and white so that you can focus on the contrast and tone rather than colour.

3. Getting your image stencil ready
With one of your print outs you'll be cutting out the entire image as the fill, so put one print out aside for now. With the other using your pens and makers fill the areas you want to cut out. If your planning on painting black on a white fill cut out the dark areas and if white on a black fill the light areas. Avoid creating islands in your stencil (the space that will become your stencil), keep it as one whole piece.

4. Now to cut it out
Glue down your printouts onto the medium you wish to cut your stencil out from, whether it be thick card or acetate. Once dry then start cutting out all the areas you filled in and on the other cut the entire fill area.
Opps! I cut too much... If you cut an area that you were not meant to, masking tape is very handy to use to repair the damage.

5. Your ready to use it
You should now have two full piece of cardboard/acetate that is your two layer stencil. Feel free to use all types of mediums; acrylic, aerosol, glitter and what ever else comes to mind to show off your stencil. You use the fill layer first then the more highly detailed layer. If you've made your stencil from cardboard do be mindful when using mediums with a high water content as the stencils tend to deteriorate much quicker.

Hints + Tips - Be Gracious

For me as I grew up playing all sorts of sports. I was just as much rejected as accepted for things. I can remember when I was just 11 years old being bumped out of a swimming team relay because and I'm not kidding you "These girls have always competed together", yet I was the fastest swimmer. I'll be honest I cried and I tried to hide those tears by saying "I'm just tired". I'd like to say that was a one off incident but it happened a few times with various swimming groups. At the tender age of 11 I was learning to accept that no matter how good I was or how good I thought I was, sometimes other people call the shots and that I had to graciously accept them.

Even today I get rejected though now from exhibitions, markets, books ect. I do get accepted into plenty more and when I do, I do a happy dance, I also have a whinge when I don't - but only to those closest. Why? Well because you never know who is listening (or reading), could the curator who rejected you for the exhibition think you are best suited for another exhibition or maybe it just so happened that the photography of your work wasn't good enough to make it into the book, but they still loved your work. Who knows? I don't endorse sucking up or pandering but I do support being a gracious loser.

When you do get that rejection email or phone call, sure have a whinge but just be careful who to. Not everyone can win or be in everything.

RIP Michael Peterson


 

Last Thursday, 29 March the surfing world lost a living legend, Michael Peterson. He died of a Heart Attack in his home in Queensland, Australia at the age 59. Now I could go on about how much he influenced the surfing world and the like, but instead I want to share with you a small memory I have of him.

In 2005 I was at the Rip Curl Pro at the world famous Bells Beach, watching the women's final between Sofia Mulanovich and Serena Brooke. Watching it alongside me was none other that Michael Ho and Michael Peterson, I couldn't of been in better company if I tried. I may not of been able to tell which one of these men was the most eccentric, though for them there was the serious competitive side of surfing and the side where it's all about enjoying the journey.

I personally only crossed paths a few times with MP, but in those few times he oozed creative flare and a passion.
