Hints + Tips - Website Recomendation

I'm only recently new to Mashable even though it was founded in 2005, almost 6 year ago. I have found Mashable to be a top source for news in social and digital media, technology and web culture. Mashable claims to be the most prolific news site reporting breaking web news, providing analysis of trends, reviewing new websites and services, and offering social media resources and guides. You know what? They live up to that claim. So whether or not you want to know what are the hottest apps, the gossip in the IT world or just some tips on blogging better. Mashable is a one stop shop.
It's well worth the reading, even if it's just a few articles over your Sunday morning cup of tea.

Hints + Tips - Brilliant At The Basics of Business

David Airey’s Be brilliant at the basics post is a good reminder of the basic rules of business. After reading them I realised that I'm guilty of breaking one of them on the odd occasion, which has made me have a bit of a re-think about things.

The tips come from the mini-book Brilliant At The Basics of Business 100, by author, designer, and teacher Nicholas Bate of Oxford-based Strategic Edge.

If the 11 rules that David Airey has picked out doesn't feed our hunger you can read the full 100 business tips in this free PDF (70kb).

Hints + Tips - Cross Training

Wave - Nicole Tattersall

Lately I've taken up swimming again, which has made me think about how hard I use to train. Sure it was about 10 years ago that I was taking my swimming quite seriously, but there are some things that I recall. One of the key things that was drilled into me was the importance of cross training. Whilst I was making my way up and down the pool last week I was thinking how this applies to being creative. With the key to cross training being that you do different things to compliment the key activity your doing. I can't see why not it can't apply to being creative.

A prime examples is that I'm mainly a painter and illustrator, though yet I enjoy working on a little bit of photography every now and then. When I look back at what I gain from photography there are certain things that I mimic in my paintings and illustrations:
• composition
• dark and light
• colour
• how 3D images look in a 2D format

By mixing in a different medium I keep things interesting and get to train skills that I use when painting and illustrating. If your a photographer what not mix it up with some sculpture, should you be a painter why not try some sewing... it can only do you good.

Introducing 3...

Whilst taking some time out during my Christmas and New Years break I had a bit of a clean out of my studio. In doing so I came across these old favorites...

My collection of Finger Puppets. These ones are from Paris and Hobart.

Typewriter Ribbons that I bought from the Konwak Market a little while back

The rainbow slinky I received as part of a pack of stuff from doing some work for the Disney Chanel a few years ago at the Royal Melbourne Show

Guz - Politically Erect

Guz is one the stencil artists whose work inspired me to get into stenciling several years ago at the Melbourne Stencil Festival held at the Rose Street Market. Since then not much has changed... though to my surprise Guz has yet to have had a solo show, until now that is. This coming Wednesday For Walls will play host to "Politically Erect the debut show from Guz".

Being a true blue Aussie at heart the approach to his artwork is usually whimsical , even critical. He often dances along a fine line between vulgarity, pornography and popular culture. His work is heavily influenced by the new age of cyber culture where an agglomeration of images can be poured over in one night long sitting. He chooses a number of mediums but prefer to make his canvases by hand and spend countless blistering hours cutting and spraying. He chops, edits and destroys images. In this show porn stars, politicians and even 1960's movie posters are juxtaposed to create something designed to have you asking yourself questions.

To much to my delight Guz painted one of my surfboards (right) a little ago with one of my favourite stencils of his. Which I feels outlines most of what I've been told you can expect to see when taking a look at "Politically Erect" - boobs and guns.

For Walls Gallery
Miss Libertine
34 Franklin Street, Melbourne
Exhibition Opening: Wednesday 5 January, 6pm - 8pm
Exhibition: Wednesday 5 - Friday 28 January

Hints + Tips - Social Media and the Stationery Industry

Even though by trade I don't design greeting cards, yes I put my artwork on them but wouldn't refer to myself as a greeting card designer I subscribe to the Kate Harper's Greeting Card Design Blog. Recently she did a recap of popular posts from 2010and one that caught my eye was "Social Media and the Stationery Industry ". It explores social media and how it's changing the stationery industry and art licensing business.

There are plenty of links to interviews with designers, greeting card manufacturers, trend forecasters, and card sales reps who use social media in their businesses. They talk about how it has changed the way they work and how they use social media for what the do.

Introducing 3...

Having of been in my house for now about 3 months I thought it about time to share some photos I've taken around the place. The three photos below feature the shed (studio), plums freshly picked from one of the many fruit trees on the property and a snap shot of the view from the backdoor. It's been lovely watching how the place has changed throughout Spring into Summer.

A Place To Sleep

I'm a huge fan of hammocks, blankets, rugs and other forms of sleeping outside and this floating tee-pee is no exception. I just wish I knew where to get one. With the weather being nice and warm in Melbourne at the moment it would be lovely to spend the warm nights outside swaying away in one of these. For now though I'll just have to stick to my hammock.
