Patchworked - Sneak Peek

I'm one for keeping a few secrets up my sleeve, however as a little treat, above are some sneak peeks at three of my works that I'll be showing at "Patchworked", my first ever Melbourne solo exhibition.

I honestly have to say that I've not gone into an exhibition of this scale before feeling this relaxed. I've been really enjoying the creative process and can't wait to get some of the bigger pieces finished. I get the feeling that I'll have more pieces that what I need, but I think that's a better position to be in, than having too little amount of works.

Hints + Tips - Working with a Framer

mr frame #1 by petra mrzyk & jean francois moriceau from energeticspell

At the moment I have a pile of works that need framing. Which made me think about the first time I ever went to get anything framed and how nervous I was about it. I didn't quite know what to expect, I spent all this time on these works and then to hand them over to someone who I didn't know and getting them to frame it, what did I need to do, what were they going to do?

Now it's becoming a little old hat, but I'm still learning something new each time I go. What advice can I offer to those getting their works framed...

1. Ask around, ask other artists who they use or who they recommend not to go to.
2. Shop around, get a feel for the framers and be comfortable with them and the pricing. This could be a long time business relationship and it's good to start off on the right foot.
3. If someone has reccomended them to you make sure you let them know.
4. Ask about how long it takes to turn around job, when dealing with deadlines this is important.
5. You can start by giving them a few pieces to frame and see how it goes, if they do a good job and you like the service, go back there, if not, then never return.
6. I've three framers that I work with, one that does my canvases and stretching and two for framing. One of these is on my way too and from work and the other is a bit out of the way and I can visit on Saturdays, which can be a bit frustrating if I'm short on time.
7. Now that I've a good business relationship with all three I'll take in up to 10 works at a time, sometimes more, but giving them plenty of time to work with. This way I also get a good price. Plus if I know I have another lot of works that I'll be bringing in, I let them know too.
8. As much as they say, we can work to deadlines, try to give them as much time as possible.
9. When you go in with your works ensure that they are already to be framed.
10. Have an idea how you would like to see your works framed, but also be open to suggestions.
11. When you pick your works up, check them at the framers, that way if there is anything wrong, it can be dealt with there and then.

Photos From My Europe Trip - Update

As you may know I've started on uploading photos from my recent trip to Europe on Flickr. I've already done our first stop, which was Weimar, Germany. Now I've uploaded some pictures from Quedlinburg, Germany. A Medieval town we stopped in on our way to Berlin. Stopping here resulted in me thinking twice about my liking of cobblestones. Patchworked - My Solo Exhibition!

At Large Gallery are proud to present "Patchworked", my first ever Melbourne solo exhibition. It Opens on Friday 17 of September and will run until Thursday 30 September.

For my first Melbourne solo exhibition "Patchworked" it will be heavily influenced by the art and craft techniques of times gone by, Australia and my recent trip to Germany. I'll be incorporating these factors with my passion for animal rights and the encouragement of using ones imagination. I've chosen to leave the stencils in their place this time round and work more so in an illustrative style both in 2D and 3D formats, allowing me get a little darker with my works than normal.

In the exhibition there are 3 illustrations which I have created, reflecting upon WSPA's (World Society for the Protection of Animals) campaign against the live export of sheep. A program that I've been supporting and spreading the word about. These illustrations have been designed to be a conversation starter about the topic. Much like most of works planned for "Patchworked"

I'm so excited about this exhibition and will be posting a little bit more about the show closer to the date, which isn't to far away.

On Bacon & Brett: PHEELIX

I've tried to sum up this exhibition in my own words and realised I could not do it any better than the man himself...

"Francis Bacon famously remarked to Brett Whiteley at the opening of his ‘Christie-series’ in 1965, “You use me the way I use Velásquez...”
There is a grand tradition of artists reacting and rebounding off each other throughout history, not just in style and substance but directly referencing and re-mixing imagery.
I believe we are all enveloped in a collagé- not in an academic sense but personally, physically, creatively and socially.
My blend is of the spraycan and the past- Oils, illustration, construction and conversation. This body of work is not simply visual essays on these prominent artists; but more about my long-term digestion of their influence and a reflection on myself, as just another cog in the on-going Armageddon of now." - Pheelix

Hints + Tips - DIY Wooden Wax Seal

Recently while cruising the blog world I cam across a tutorial on how to make your very own wax seal out of a piece of wooden dowel over at Ragehaus, to check it out for your self visit www.ragehaus.com/?p=1215.

I keep thinking how cute it would be to have a wax seal, but can never justify spending the amount of money on one, this might just be a way I can have one or maybe more wax seals, whilst still keeping my bank balance intact.

Kim and Derek also have some other wonderful tutorials on their site to that a worth reading too!

Road Trip

Jan Jac - Nicole Tattersall

As I write this post I'm getting ready to go for a surf today. Yes it will be cold, yes it will be a big swell, but yes I need to get out and do something, that's inspiring. After only being back from my trip less than I week I'm feeling the need to explore and check out new things. What better way than packing my surfboard, a towel, my wetsuit and a camera in car, then heading down the coast.

Hints + Tips - How To Go On Holidays And Leaving Your Art At Home

As you may have read recently, I've spent the past two weeks on holidays away in Europe. For someone like me, who not only works full time but also has her finger in many arty pies I had to be organised so that when I did have a brief moment to check my phone or emails that I wasn't pulling my hair out. During the whole trip I checked my emails once and my phone was maybe once every few days. So how did I do this?

Letting People Know
Prior to leaving I sent every gallery, person or company I deal with a brief email or message letting them know I was going overseas and if there was something that couldn't wait till I got back they had until a certain time and date to get back to me to respond. When you get back let them know your back too.

Vacation Mode
I set up vacation modes on my online stores and set an email auto response, so that people who were contacting me knew I was away and when I would be getting back. Just make sure you cancel them when you do get back!

Stock
If there was anything I needed to send to people, even during the first week upon my return I had it posted out before I left. This way I'm not running like a frantic chook when I got back, though I kinda was before I left.

Payments
Any payments due while away or just when you get back, pay them before you leave, this way you know just how much spending money you can spend without trying to dig up soem cash when you return, to pay for markets ect.

Everyone deserves a little time out and to esnure it is stress free a little planning is always helpful! So did I have any issue? Other than being asked if I have any pieces for an exhibition back home, whilst at Kula Lumpar Airport waiting for my next flight heading towards Germany, nope there was none.

Back In Oz

I'm back in Australia after my 2 week trip to Europe where I visited the towns and cities of Weimar, Quedlinburg, Potsdam, Berlin, Grossenketen, Emmen Zoo, Baltrum, Bremen, Oldenburg, Ahlhorner Fischteiche, Utrecht, Antwerp, Paris, Reims, Chateau de Sedan (castle), Burg Eltz (castle) and Frankfurt. All in the countries of Germany, Netherlands, France, Belgium, and Luxemburg.
From all that traveling I now have well over 700 photos to go through and sort out, once that's done I'll put together some posts with them, sharing stories from my trip.

This trip unintenially has also inspired me for some of my works for my solo show coming up at At Large Gallery in September. I can't wait to wait to put pen to paper!
