Introducing 3...

As someone who does only the odd bit of photography with my point and shoot camera I'm always in awe of what others can achieve with a camera. It is my pleasure to introduce you to three different photographers who are all currently based in Melbourne.

Hints + Tips - Being Prepared

Last week I pointed you in the direction of Lauren Stutter's post about how to create a press release for exhibitions and other kinds of events. This week I would like to offer some advice in being prepared for when you get that email/phone call requesting some info and pictures as they want to feature your work or when you want to apply for a market, exhibition or grant. It will save you time and will make you look polished.

1.
Biography
Have a short bio and long biography prepared; my short biography is the first paragraph of my long biography.
Have some brief information at the top, your first paragraph should be an introduction to what you do, the second paragraph generally contains information about why you do what you do and the last is a bit of re-cap on everything you just covered. Then follow-up with links where people can find out more about you and keep up to date with exhibitions/events/new products.
I also offer it mine in dot point form at times to. To see mine visit www.nicoletattersall.blogspot.com/2008/01/nicole-tattersall-artist-cv.html

2. CV/Resume
Keep track of things that you've been apart of in regards to your work. Make a list of everything from features, exhibitions, live paintings, magazine articles and anything else of relevance. The most common way of presenting this information is by placing items under type and then under the year.

Then when passing on your CV/Resume make a copy and condense it to contain the information that will be of relevance to the person reading it. Ensure you update it on a regular basis to keep it up to date.
To view my artist CV/Resume visit www.nicoletattersall.blogspot.com/2008/01/nicole-tattersall-artist-cv.html

3. Your Photo
For the past year I've been getting away with some happy snaps for interviews and the like however when I started to receive
requests for interviews in magazines I knew it was time to up the quality. I'm very lucky that a friend of mine does a lot of portrait photography for bands and musicians (Kate Griffin www.griffinrocks.com.au) so I made a call and we spent a Saturday morning taking some photos that are of a higher quality than just some happy snaps.
You don't need to go out and book a professional photographer, if you've a friend or a relative who is a photographer they are more than likely willing to help you out.

4. Pictures of Your Work
The same goes for shots of artwork and products you want them to look as good as they do in the flesh. I still take my own photos with my point and shoot camera though I make sure the colours of the art works come as true as possible and that the lighting is good with minimal reflections. Also when taking photos of product think about the context and how to make it look a little more interesting than just a necklace on a table top.

5. Organised
So that you have everything on hand keep it all in one file on your computer. That way you've all the images and information in one location and it will minimise wasting time having to search for the image of that piece that you want to feature.

Bic By Another Medium

Is it too early to start putting in requests for Christmas presents yet? If not I would love a Athas Pen in Rose Gold or Green Gold; pretty pretty please with a cheery on top.

The Athas Pen is a replica of the humble Bic pen, with each individual pen being made uniquely with a signature, individual number and the option of having it engraved. The production of each pen takes up to 45 days, with each step being pure eye for detail craftsmanship, so much so that it even has the Bic base which makes refilling it nice and easy.

I’m just loving the extra class they’ve given to a pen that there are 100’s of in various office work spaces, it takes the not so exclusive to an exclusive level with added jazz. With six colours available it’s hard to pick which one; steel, argentum, brass, gold, rose gold or green gold.... ummm... why not all six?

Random Collective 2009

I'm so proud to be curating the second Random Collective at Mushroom Crafts in Leongatha this year! I started the concept in 2008 with the first Random Collective held in Wonthaggi which featured artists from around the globe. The goal of Random Collective is about taking a wide variety of styles of artworks to the people in regional towns who may of only seen works like this via the internet or on the odd trip to the city.

For 2009 as the space is more intermit I'm taking works by a select group of some well known and not so well known faces in the Melbourne art scene. Those coming on this country road trip are Alice McKellar, Kate Brownlee, Kate Lightfoot, Laura McKellar, Leeana Edwards, Megan Dell, Rhen, Snookie, Meredith Earls and myself (Nicole Tattersall)

Some odd details to note about the artists:
• Alice McKellar, Kate Lightfoot, Laura McKellar, myself (Nicole Tattersall) and Meredith Earls have been shown in the recent editions of Curvy brought out by YEN magazine.
• Alice McKellar and Leeana Edwards currently both excel in textile based courses.
• Megan Dell and Rhen have both had works shown at the Melbourne Stencil Festival.
• Snookie, is active in the Melbourne art scene teaching youths how to be creative.
• Kate Brownlee, from the UK, but currently resides in Melbourne; her works are a mix between stencil and abstract.
• Meredith Earls creates enchanting and wondrous pieces of illustration and graphic design.
• Rhen is the token male in the exhibition.
• Kate Lightfoot claims in an interview to of been able to catch piegons with her hands.

I'm also very lucky that we have the support of We Make Stuff Good (www.wemakestuffgood.com) and No Vacancy Gallery (www.no-vacancy.com.au) in Melbourne.

If I had...

If I had a spare $3758 US, I would just love to have one of the PRC (Personal Rockin'Computer) suspended chairs for just floating, swaying, rocking or simply hanging around. It just looks so relaxing and I can so v. easily imagine sitting there reading a good book or writing my next blog post.

Though for now until I have a spare $3758 US, I'll just have to settle for a $30 hammock from the hard ware store.

To view more information about this chair visit www.pidltd.com

The Happy Endings

Recently I was introduced to the music of Melbourne based band 'The Happy Endings' whose music reminds me of a sunny drive down to the coast for a surf. Which is kind of fitting as they formed when these lads started jamming at mutual friends Sunday afternoon BBQ

'The Happy Endings' will be at the Corner Hotel Friday 5 June, along with Zoophyte and Ben Smith. Tickets are only $12 + BF. If your in Melbourne why not head on down and support some of our local talent whilst enjoying the wonderful venue which is the Corner Hotel in Richmond. (I've never seen a bad band play there yet)

Hints + Tips - Dealing with the Media

A while ago on Lauren Sutter’s (Adelaide-based arts writer) blog Star & Bluebird (www.starandbluebird.wordpress.com) she posted an article about ‘Dealing with the media’. I’ve been referring a few people to this post of late as I’ve received some press releases for exhibitions with much required details missing, making it very hard to post any thing about it.

Lauren’s post includes a detailed list of what is required and also a useful media pack template. Whether you are just starting out or just want to brush up on how to promote your next exhibition in the best possible light visit www.starandbluebird.wordpress.com/2008/12/0 /dealing-with-the-media to read her write up about ‘Dealing with the media’

‘Quiet Storm’

‘Quiet Storm’ at Gallery 1988 in LA will feature works by some amazing illustrators; Scott Campbell, Krista Huot, Roland Tamayo and Melbourne’s own Ghost Patrol. I always get a buzz from seeing Melbourne artists being a part of exhibitions internationally and I wish Ghost Patrol all the best with it!

LA, USA
Gallery 1988
7020 Melrose Ave (At LA Brea)
LA, California, USA
Opening Night: Tuesday 26 May, 7pm - 10pm
Exhibition: Tuesday 26 May to Thursday 18 June
