Hints + Tips - Blogging

1. Have a theme

What will your blog be about? You, your art, your passion for fashion, how to look after dogs? This is the first thing you must think about. It will give your frame work to proceed with everything else and stick with it as consistency is they key feature in a great blog.

2. Who is your audience?
Will it be your friends and family, clients, people with a similar interest? What age group are they? This is so very important as it relates highly to where you advertise/promote as well as your layout and content.
An example would be if your writing a blog about activities for elderly people you would have a nice simple typeface of a generous point size so that it is easy to read. Promotion wouldn't be on a blog/site about hot pants, it would be on a recipe blog/site and you wouldn't post about the hottest trendy night spot in town for under 18's.

3. Layout
If I go into a blog and the layout is not user friendly I click out of there faster than I clicked in, yet if it's really good I stay for a while.
Be careful of flaring of the text, use colours that go together and the layout should be straight forward and easy to navigate.
Visit other blogs, what do you like and not like about the layout? Don't copy but be inspired.
Blogs with layouts I really like:
www.swiss-miss.com
www.mintdesignblog.com
www.honorbowden.blogspot.com
See what your blog looks like on different computers too. Ask a honest friend to review your blog and tell you what they think.

4. Who is visiting you?
Set up a site meter, I use sitemeter (www.sitemeter.com) but there are plenty of other options out there, so do your research and pick one that's right for you.
It tells me lots of useful information such as how many hits per day, what time they visited, how they found my blog, what country they are from and more. This will give you a better understanding of who your readers are and show your progress.
If you've recently handed out a pile of business cards, added your blog to blog lists ect. you can see how much of an impact it's had with the amount of visitors.

5. Spread the word
Now you've done all the hard work you've got to tell people about your blog. Here are some way to do so:
• Have a link in the signature of your emails
• Place a link for your blog on blog list sites that are relevant to your theme
• If you're on a social networking site eg Facebook, Myspace, Twitter? Then have a link from your profile
• Your blog should be on your business card if it's relevant or get a separate card made up
• Talk to people about it
