Hints + Tips - Create Your Mailing List

Over at Art Biz Blog they talk about how to create your mailing list, which is so very useful. Some other advice that I would like add to it to help you out with your own mailing list is:

• I noticed that at a recent market that if I had my business cards out there were few people signing up to my mailing but when I took my business cards away I had alot more people signing up to mailing list. This means that I'm guaranteed to have at least one more contact with them and not just be another business card in the bottom of a handbag. In saying that I did still have business cards on me should they ask for one.

• When sending out emails always BBC your contacts, as you've worked hard for your mailing list. You don't want to just go giving it away do you?

• Don't bombard your contacts every few days. I send out one newsletter at the end of every month that re-caps what I've been up to and what I'm working towards. Only if there is something very last minute that I'll send something out in-between newsletters.

Hints + Tips - Cutting Stencils

Every so often someone asks me about how they can learn to cut stencils or how I do it. Well it depends on what they what to do as to how to go about your stencil. My advice that I give is I tell them to visit www.stencilrevolution.com, which is where I first learnt all about how to cut stencils.

My next step is to tell them that they should make the images there own. Not just place it in a program, press a button, print and then cut where the computer told them too. Think outside the square a little more, if something in the image doesn't look right, adjust it until it does. Make it your own style.

You can also check out a post I did a while ago about how to cut a 1 layer stencil at www.nicoletattersall.blogspot.com/2009/03/hints-tips-1-layer-stencil.html

Nightmare Before Christmas Series 1 Trading Figure Set

Generally I'm not one to collect toys or figurines, however when in Villain the other week at QV I came across this set of 6 characters from Tim Buton's Nightmare Before Christmas and I couldn't help myself and I ended up getting Shock and Zero. Others in the series are Jack Skellington, Sally, Lock and Barrelm Dr. Finkelstein and Oogie Boogie.

They are small at just 2 to 4-inches, with each being highly detailed and easy to put together in a matter of minutes. Just snap them together and create a scene from the movie! Each box is individually packaged and labeled so you will always know what you are getting! Which is always a bonus.

Yarn and Needle Plate Set

I know so many people that these plates with there swirly lines, yarn, needle and button, would just suit to a 't'. It's also the attention to detail and the line work that is also inspiring. Even though I can sit on hours on end cutting a stencil there is something about drawing line after line that I simply get into. To find out more about these stunning plates head on over to www.poketo.com/shop/archives/457

Noa Noa Christmas

Have you yet had a look at the Noa Noa Christmas Catalogue? It's simply devine. I just love the elegant layering of clothing and the colours! At times I wish it wasn't so warm here in Australia oh to be able to be able to dress like this and not suffer from over heating.

Also the miniatures (children) range is also worth a sneak peak the styling of the shoot is just to die for.

Mint?

Last night whilst at the 'Introducing Jane Bell Lane' I popped into Villain and out I came with two gorgeous tins of mints by Hint Mint. Which is perfect for me as I have a little secret thing for collecting mint tins. These ones are actually pretty special as they are limited edition and feature works by the likes of Shag, Gary Baseman and other artists which are not pictured above.

I just think these make such wonderful stocking stuffers and I would be more delighted to be given one this Christmas. So which ones did I get for myself? Shag - Holiday Peppermint and James Jean - Holiday Peppermint.

I Can't Believe It's Not 696

On Sunday December 13th when 696 close their doors for the year, it will sadly be for the last time.

You may remember a while ago I use to have my works there. The girls at 696 played such a huge part in me getting my foot in the door and getting together the confidence to show my works in the big city. I'm sure this is the same for many other artists out there too.

On Saturday 13 December they are throwing a party to say goodbye to the gallery/space that provides many memeories for many people and to celebrate their new start as an Artist Representation Agency.

So make sure you come and say goodbye to a Melbourne art institution for body painted models, live music by Richie 1250 & The Brides of Christ and Mr Crispe and the Wildman, and of course art from some of your favourite 696 artists!

Where Have I Been?

A huge apology to everyone for pretty much dropping off the face of the blogging planet. I've been in-between jobs, moved house and had the No Vacancy Art & Design market which ran over last Friday to Sunday.

I'm still getting myself out of boxes and settling into my new job, which so far I'm just loving! The market has been and gone which is why you'll notice some new items popping up in my online store over the coming days.

My next big projects are a little something that I'm working on for WSPA which will be launched in January and also my duo exhibition with Megan Dell at No Vacancy Gallery in February.

Though never fear as I plan to keep blogging all the way through!

Beatmas, Numbskull, Phibs & Yok

Build over ice in aMBUSH gallery equal parts Beastman, Numskull, Phibs, Yok and then stir. There you have it, a true blue aussie cocktail of unique styles, characters and innovative techniques.

All four artists will combine their skills and methods to create a collaborative mural, sculptural installations and show case new original paintings and illustrations. This is what can be best described as an exhibition of epic proportions by some of the forerunners of the underground art scene.

If you are in Sydney this coming Thursday make your way along to the opening and see just what it is that make these four artists so special and inspiring.

An exhibition of this size would not be possible without the help of:

2010 Calendar - is it Jack or is it Jill?

Between moving house I've been busy completing a calendar for next year which features illustrations from "is it Jack or is it Jill?" I will have it available at the No Vacancy Art Market and in my online shop in the coming days, so keep your eyes peeled.

Each page is printed on recycled card and joined together with a deep red ribbon.

Hints + Tips - What To Post About?

At times I myself hit hurdles and have no clue what I should post about, especially this time of year when the gallery scene comes to a bit of a stand still and there are no exhibitions on. Everyone on the artist social circuit goes into some type of summer hibernation.

Here are 5 helpful tips that I use in getting those creative juices flowing and being able to create some content for my blog...

1. Seasons and Celebrations
Most recently we've had Christmas, it's also summer and we've Australia Day coming up here in Australia. These are all things you can base a post around, whether it be what's on in your own city/town, what to wear, gifts, table settings, cards, crafts, artwork in relation ect. the list can go on-and-on.

2. What have I done?
You may of been on a day trip or maybe even went away on holidays for a few days. Now you don't don't need to tell every single detail, but this maybe something that your readers maybe be interested in checking out themselves.
An example of this is that you may of gone into the city and only spent $20 per person and seen a whole stack of things, or maybe a the super cute B&B you stayed at served the best breakfast you've ever had.

3. I like
Did you see a movie, go to a restaurant, check out an exhibition, see something in a shop... anything you like/d you can blog about. It's so simple, what better than to write about stuff you like!

4. Help!
Every now and then people need advice; like this post you too could write helpful tips that you think you readers maybe interested in, or you may want to put a call out because you need some much needed help!

5. Have I learned something of late?
Was there something lately that you have learned and think others will also gain knowledge from knowing it too. For me, in the past I've done posts about company's that don't test their products on animals. This is information that I use on a day-to-day basis and felt that others could benefit from knowing it too.

Hints + Tips - Hone Your Artist Statement

Recently I've been busy with several exhibitions which means that I've been writing all types of information for different reasons, one of which has been my artist statements.

Over at Art Biz there is an article titled Art Marketing Action: Hone Your Artist Statement. Which I think is helpful to other artists out there also doing the same thing, or are about to and need a helping hand in writing their own artist statements.

Once Upon - Leeloo Exhibition - Round-up

Sadly I couldn't be in Sydney for the opening of 'Once Upon' but I have heard that there was well over 300 people who made it to aMBUSH last Thursday night and that a great night was had by all, which is amazing. Congratulations to Angela and Renne for doing such a great job!

I was delighted to find out that two of my pieces had sold. It's such a nice feeling when you've spent time working on something and to have someone think so highly of it that they wish to purchase it and hang it on their wall.
If you didn't make it to the exhibition you can check out all the works on the 'Once Upon' blog at www.onceuponexhibition.wordpress.com/art-for-sale and should you also wish to hang one on your wall you'll be able to purchase them too!
The pieces I created for 'Once Upon' which are below are from the style/theme that I like to call 'is it Jack or is it Jill' which about two children Jack (named after my grandfather) and Jill. Rather than watch TV and play computer games use their wild imaginations and high skill level of tearing apart their mothers sheet and table clothes to make wonderous things.
On a rainy winters day they are putting on a puppet show about one of their favorite Brothers Grim's story 'the Golden Goose' for their favorite aunt who has come to visit for the weekend from far far away.

Each piece was created with ink and watercolour on some very beautiful watercolour paper.
“The Golden Goose 1″ :: original, framed :: $130

“The Golden Goose 2″ :: sold

“The Golden Goose 3″ :: original, framed :: $130

“The Golden Goose 4″ :: sold

P.S Artist Maddelynn Holmes has already posted some pictures of the opening on her blog, as has Dawn Tan.
