Gift Ideas

Yesterday I wrote about how to be prepared for emergency gift giving, well I thought today I'd continue the theme with some small gifts ideas that I like to do and give:

1. Create a gift basket/bag/box. Once for a friend of mine I hand painted a calico bag and went to the local health food store and bought a selection of yummy treats to fill it with. Not only are the contents useful, but he proclaimed he was a staving musician and so at least he could eat the goodies and keep a bag that will be useful for when he did have the cash to go shopping. You can also do the same with beauty products, small toys, homemade muffins ect. The best thing is that you can easily work within a any budget.

I would love to receive some yummy blue berry muffins in one of these stamped paper bags from Poppies for Grace

2. Think outside the box or inside the box or around the box, give a gift that is quirky, functional and has a unique style about it. No, I'm not talking about going out and buying a BBQ Apron with some funny saying on it. Something more design focused. Browse the net, visit your local gallery shops and other quirky places. You can pick up some amazing things in all price ranges.

These Ceramic Crinkle Cups originally designed by Rob Brandt are one of my many favorites. Available at A plus R Store
So many riffs these days on the Dixie and other throwaway table ware, but these ceramic cups were the first and are still the best. Netherlands ceramicist Rob Brandt introduced them in 1975, and three decades later the crinkle effect only underscores the ingenious statement they make on our disposable culture. Fill the tall with wine or water; the mini is ideal for shots of espresso, sake or other spirit. Gift a set for use or a single as an objet de pop art. - A plus R Store
3. ART! Okay so I paint and this is a pretty much a given and something that isn't much of a challenge for me, but for those who want to buy a little creative piece for someone there are plenty of stores that you can visit in person or online at varies prices. Art is a personal thing and can be little hard to get just the right piece, so I offer to paint a painting for them but you can give them a gift voucher.

Lately I've been getting into screen prints and letter press prints. So it's no surprise I'm thinking that Grenade By Jacob Arden McClure available at Keep Calm Gallery would make a wonderful gift for myself.

Gift Prepared

I know Christmas is over 3 months away but there are always happy birthdays, births, weddings, farewells, thank yous and more that if your anything like me love to give a small gift for. There are several things I do to make sure I'm prepared for that emergency small gift giving situation:
  1. Have a largish sized boxed or a shelf in a cupboard to store all the things required
  2. Stock up on ribbon, tape, boxes, blank cards, themed cards, gift bags, wine tags, scissors and tissue paper (most of which you can re-use from previous gifts you've received or make yourself or pick up on sale)
  3. Have a small selection of bits and pieces such as scratchies, sample size beauty products, pieces of jewelry and anything else you spot in your trips to the shop that might make a great small gift.
For wine bottle tags I just adore Popp Tags

You can pick up some great wrapping paper and other gift giving accessories online at kikki.K

If you want that hand made look without the painful hours of sticking everything together yourself Heather's Handmade Creations has just the cards for you in her Etsy Store.

Quick Trip Away...

Last weekend I made it a long weekend by taking off the Friday and Monday for a much needed trip away. We headed down the Great Ocean Road to Port Fairy for 2 nights in a wonderful B&B.
I believe that people should just explore what is around them and go down the unknown paths, as you never know what may lay at the end. Which is why our trip wasn't very planned at all.
With many times 'do you want to drive down there' been uttered in the car and some mileage on our shoes we discovered some wonderful natural and non-natural things. Fresh from my camera are some shots for your viewing pleasure.

Cards!

The other weekend I got a little excited about my new toys. I had recently bought myself a staple gun (yes everyone needs one) and a paper cutter thing that does more than just cuts paper (doesn't make coffee though).

This paper cutter thing inspired me to to paint some of my stencils onto cards, hence for your own delight are some below. They are available at my Etsy store www.nicoletattersall.etsy.com

Behind the Scenes with Local Designers at the Thread Den

If you looking for a place filled with local Melbourne designs, vintage treasures and a sewing lounge Thread Den in North Melbourne is the place. Here you will also find the sewing lounge that holds numerous classes from beginner to advanced, run by local designers, and is open for
hourly drop in hire with free assistance.

Rather than curling up at home infront of the heater why not go behind the scenes to meet the designers, watch them work on their spring/summer ranges and discover what it takes to become part of the Melbourne fashion scene.

While you are there you I recommend checking out the two week long exhibition that displays refashioned vintage garments by Australian musicians. This show showcases garments, accessories and textiles by up and coming designer labels including Leonard St, Mintslice Afternoons, Fine Cloth, Oh Bluebird and Ishee. You also have the opportunity to choose your favorite piece and vote in the people's choice awards for your own chance to win a Janome Sewing Machine
donated by Janome and Statewide Sewing Centers.
