Ali J - This is so very sad...

If you've not heard of Ali J from WA, Australia, where have you been? This talented Australian illustrator has recently had one of her stunning pieces appear on a t-shirt without her permission... rather than hear it second hand from me please take the time to visit her blog.

Melbourne Galleries

With so many new kids on the block in Melbourne, it's hard to pick out which freshly painted galleries to check out. Here are some of late that I highly recommend spending a few moments visiting:

Famous When Dead
Located on Victoria Parade just up the road from the Queen Victoria Market. You could easily stop by and check out some amazing art work, do some shopping at the market, grab a delish coffee at one of the many near by cafes and head home to make a yummy meal with the fresh produce you just bought, that you could share with a few close friends.
Offering a vast selection of pieces from established, new and emerging Australian and International contemporary artists.

Gorker Gallery
Opened last week with their first exhibition "The Forty Thieves". After a day snapping up bargains on Smith street, this is the must have stop before venturing onto Brunswick street to indulge in great food, music and drink.

No Vacancy
In the heart of the city at QV there is not only the art works to check out, there is shopping, movies, food, drinks, music, theatre and more. Next time you are in the CBD this is something to add to your must visit list!
This gallery aims to be the link between artist run and commercial art spaces.

Your Homepage by Nada Poljski

With sites like Facebook, Myspace and almost every other person (including me) having a blog or website or even both, it's no surprise that the secrets, gossip and general chit chat that makes it way thru cyber space is the topic of Nada Poljski collection 'Your Homepage'.

"An exhibition of concertina books made from hand cut lino prints with dry point etching. 'Your Homepage' is a collection of dialogue gathered from eaves dropping into people¹s conversations. Today, the internet has become a
device where people¹s private affairs are readily available for viewing in a way that almost seems intrusive. What was once a privilege is now an open invitation to view people¹s thoughts and secrets. I create a World Wide Web and weave the text into maps, buildings and human figures  giving an architecture to the virtual space. Your Homepage is a set of concertina books, where you can click on each page to find another secret revealed."

Winter...

You see it every where... Top 10 things for Winter... Top 20 must haves for Winter... the list goes on... and on... and on!

Well I want to add to that list but with something not driven by fashion fads, sponsorship or any other influence. Here is a small list of things that I enjoy most about the winter months:

1. Drinking hot chocolate
2. How green the garden looks
3. Wearing boots, coats, jackets, scarves and gloves.
4. Going for a surf and not having the crowds that occur over summer (yes, it's cold, but that's what my 4/3 wetsuit and booties are for)
5. Curling up in bed watching movies and eating pop corn
6. Soup
7. Coming in from the cold into a nice warm pub/bar/lounge
8. Going to snow for some snow boarding
9. Puddles... they remind me of being a child.
10. If you do get caught in the rain coming home and getting change into some nice dry clothes.

Regan Tamanui - The Cult of Personality

If you are in Sydney next Saturday I declare it's a must to go and check out Regan Tamanui's exhibition at the Damien Minton Gallery in Redfern. If I had the spare cash and the time to fly from Melbourne to check it out and support this Melbourne based stencil artist I would but sadly I don't, so for now I've just got to wait till the next exhibition e is apart of at the Blender.

"The work of Regan Tamanui explores the power of mass media within Australian popular culture. The reality TV phenomena, the religion of sport, criminal lifestyles, get rich quick & instant fame becomes the obsessions, the new virtues of the 21st century. As a pioneer of the early stencil art movement in Melbourne, Tamanui more commonly known as the infamous street artist HAHA creates multi-layered stencils with the appearance of almost photo-like qualities. Regan’s stencil work will also feature as part of the “Australian Contemporary: Optism”, exhibition at “The Gallery of Modern Art” Brisbane, in November with 34 other leading Australian artist’s."

Things...

When you've nothing to do but stare at a screen... there are a few odd things I like to do:
  • Origami, this is a recent thing of mine that well I think I suck at but enjoy it none the less. (With recycled paper of coarse)
  • Sort through that file on desk top titled - sort, stuff, don't know ect.
  • Pull all my books out of my bookcase, give it a good dust and put them all back in. I find that after doing this its looks heaps neater.
  • Email a few random friends I've not seen or spoken to for a while.
  • Flip my mattress... Like want you're meant to do with tyres, is to rotate them... Same with your mattress. I do this every time I wash my sheets, to help prolong the life of the mattress and to allow for even wear; which results in a comfy nights sleep.

Towel Tip...

Having of started back into swimming of late I remembered a little trick that I've kept to myself since I was told a few years ago.

When you warp a towel whether around your waist or under the arms, does it fall down as quickly as you wrapped it around? The trick is not to tuck it in but rather to roll it over forward so that the side that is closet to you overlaps the outside and tucks under. This is almost fool proof and works better than just tucking it in.

4 Real 4 Kibera presented by Band Wagon

4 Real 4 Kibera is a fundraising event that will be held at the Oxford Art Factory this Wednesday.

There is quite a line up of artists, though I have to say that the Sydney based artists that interest me the most are Dashenka, with her folky surf art and Ozzie Right, who has been referred to as making wearing jeans on the beach cool. Both are involved with Volcom and who's work I've admired for at the very least 4 years.

Edit Industries's - Need Your Pictures For A Project

Maliscious is on his next project - by popular demand for more of the “Fuck Your China Made Surfboard” series, which is raising awareness related to preserving and keeping surfboard manufacturing in the united states rather than overseas, he needs pictures from all the ladies out there!

“This is not about race - it is about people selling out our surfing heritage and industry for money!”

They don’t just want any pictures though - you have to flip off the camera - it can be just you or a group of you (girls only). You can be as normal or done up as you like - you can be as sexy or slutty as you like. You can be naked if you like - in your work clothes if you like - do as you wish - you just have to be flipping the bird - middle finger in the air - so do what ever you feel. Doesn’t matter! But you have to flipping the bird!

All the photos are going to be on a “Fuck Your China Made Surfboard” collage that is going to be made into a fabric. The fabric is going to get laminated on to the decks of three surfboards that are going to be on display in various locations!

So please take a minute to snap the photo of yourself or have someone else take it and send it to edit industries myspace page!

Either in a message or comment just so they can copy it or if you already have one send them the link.

The boards/project is scheduled to be done by June 25th!!

This is a worthy project as the passion and lifestyle of surfing cannot be manufactured. Even though I’m from Australia I support the message that they are sending. My board was shaped for me and I just love it. You cannot get that from a dime a dozen board made in a sweat shop out of plastic.

Baby Hoot
Started in the summer of 2007 when two sisters, Jessica and Christina, realized with their sewing and business skills, they could bring affordable quality baby products to everyone! Thus, babyhoot. was born. Named after a silly story: babyhoot is Jessica's oldest daughter's attempt at saying the word 'bathing suit'. when she was two years old, she and her brother loved the soundtrack to the musical "A Year with Frog and Toad", and there's a song called "Toad Looks Funny in a Bathing Suit" that became the kids' favorite. she would sing her heart out, "toad looks funny in a BAAAY-BBBBEEEE-HOOOOT!" and there's the silly story.
With three kids under the age of six (Jessica) and as a full time nanny of three little girls (Christina) they've seen their fair share of poorly made baby stuff, and it's frustrating - blankets slapped together in another country made with scratchy material, burpcloths that don't really absorb or stay put, bibs that did NOT keep baby's clothes clean. You name it, they've seen it and were disappointed! So, all their babyhoot products must pass the is-this-good/soft/durable/cute-enough-to-use-with-the-baby?" test. If it's not good enough for their family, they most certainly won't sell it to you for your family!
Offering
things for baby that are fun, clean, fresh, modern, luxurious, and best of all... affordable! each babyhoot. item is handmade, which makes them all special & unique- just like baby!
Baby Hoot are having their first giveaway- a Messy Baby Bib of your choice! see their blog for details.

Junk Most Wondrous
Morgan likes tomatoes, country walks, classic rock, blackberries, good company and dislikes clowns, organ meats, shopping malls. A recent college grad (Radford University) living in southwest Virginia, in the beautiful foothills of the Appalachian mountains. Whilst currently working on a children's book in collaboration with their brother, who is illustrating. Morgan still finds time to create gorgeous photographs, jewelry and assembling little paper worlds.
All of my photos are taken in the Appalachian region. Most of these are within 20 miles of where Morgan grew up. Trying to capture scenes that reflect both the beauty and the mystery of this place.
Searching high and low for unique, often vintage or antique, pieces of jewelry that can be taken apart and reassembled into something no one else has. With the their help of mother for donating a large pile of fabulous 60s-70s era jewelry.
Shadowboxes are fun to make but often frustrating, once spending two days working on a scene only to realize that it would not all fit in the box. These are Morgan's favorite handmade things because they are like glimpses into little worlds.
Selected items are currently on sale in their Etsy store!

Sabrina Soaps
Based in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio and about 35 miles southeast of Cleveland; the creator behind Sabrina Soaps spends their days trying to create new scents, colors and molds. Making soaps by the melt-n-pour method, with a passion for variety.
Currently having a 50% off sale on products in their Etsy store to make room for new stock!

Muffin Physicist
The Muffin Physicist, has experimented with mixing various gluten-free flours to create the perfect wheat-like muffin that is high in fiber and protein. Years as an undergraduate studying protein folding has helped with the understanding of which flours work best to give the kind of protein required to keep a gluten free muffin together.
By indulging in these yummy goodies you may not think it but you may end up feeling a less bloated and no so 'fat'. This is generally a result people find after removing gluten and wheat from their diets.
Sadly they are only available to San Diego, USA, residents and on the campus of UCSD at the Grove Cafe as well as RIMAC.
For more information about their gluten free bakery in San Diego, please visit the following websites at:
I can honestly say that as someone who loves to cook, I would love to see mini cook books available, but I know you can't give away all your secrets.

Instead
Natasha is an artist, and maker of things that at times sometimes she cannot bear to part with. Creating in her studio paintings, cards and carefully hand embroidered pieces.

Stay tuned for another 5 featured artists that are sellers on Etsy on the July 1.
